Lappin DVM\n\n\n\nDr. Mike Lappin\, DVM was born and raised in Michigan where his family always had dogs.  One of his favorites was “Fred\,” a Beagle that he and his brother taught to bark\, earning the ire of his mother. He graduated from Parchment High School in 1966\, and continued on to Michigan State University\, where he graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1972. He moved to Massachusetts to begin his professional career at the Kingston Animal Hospital. Dr Lappin opened his own practice in 1992 in Buzzards Bay\, MA. After a name change in 1992\, “The Animal House” came into being. \n\n\n\nDr Lappin became  involved in dog training through his veterinary practice and began training his own Golden Retrievers in the early 1990’s.  He and his first Golden Retriever\, “Tess\,” discovered Agility in the mid 90’s and began competing shortly after.  Tess retired at the age of 12 years.  He is currently training and showing his 4th and 5th Golden Retrievers\, “Scarlett” and “Costello” in Agility\, Obedience\, and Rally Obedience.  Mike and his past and current “kids” have achieved numerous obedience and agility titles. \n\n\n\nA member of Yankee Golden Retriever Club\, he is on the Board of Directors and has served as their Obedience Committee chair.  He is also a member of the Golden Retriever Club of America. He has served as the Vice President of the Golden Retriever Foundation.  Dr. Lappin continues serving the Foundation as their DNA collection officer.  He has been instrumental in the Foundation’s efforts to collect DNA from Golden Retrievers to be used for health research.  With his efforts there have been over 2000 samples banked at the OFA-CHIC DNA bank\, more than any other breed of dog. Dr. Lappin also became an American Kennel Club judge of agility\, and rally obedience in 2004 to round out his “giving back to the sport” philosophy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nemail DNA clinic

SUMMARY:Cancer Detection Study
DESCRIPTION:Researchers will be on the show site to collect free-catch urine samples. Please support this important research!! \n\n\n\nDetecting cancer and other serious health problems in Goldens with Rametrix® Molecular Urinalysis (RMU)\n\n\n\nJohn Robertson VMD PhD\, President\, Rametrix Technologies\, Inc.\, Blacksburg\, VA \n\n\n\n                                                       ro********@**********ch.com                           \n\n\n\nRametrix Technologies\, Inc.\, a medical/veterinary research and development company (www.rametrixtech.com)\, has developed a urine-based technology (RMU) to detect cancer in dogs (and people).  Ramen spectroscopy profiles the molecular composition of urine\, and the team has published a paper showing detection in dogs of lymphoma\, mast cell sarcoma\, urothelial/transitional cell carcinoma\, and osteosarcoma with at least 90% accuracy using RMU technology (available at https://rametrixtech.com/resources/). \n\n\n\nThis technology uses a small amount of free-catch/voided urine\, takes less than 30 minutes\, and is economical (about the same price as a standard urinalysis at the veterinarian’s office).  Studies conducted in humans have also detected other diseases such as diabetic nephritis\, lupus nephritis\, chronic kidney failure\, and bladder cancer.  Rametrix will use this translational information gained from humans in the proposed work on Golden Retriever health. \n\n\n\nTo further validate RMU and to precisely focus it for Goldens\, Rametrix wants to conduct a 500-dog study (250 healthy dogs\, 250 dogs with cancer or other health problems\, including kidney disease) with cooperation of the Golden Retriever Club of America.  Study goals: \n\n\n\n\nDevelop a Golden Retriever-specific molecular fingerprint of urine in clinically healthy Goldens\n\n\n\nDetermine how the urine molecular fingerprint of clinically healthy dogs compares with the urine molecular fingerprint of dogs with cancer or other health problems;\n\n\n\nTrack changes between health and disease using multiple samples from the same dog\n\n\n\nDetect and profile (with RMU) other common health problems in Goldens\, including renal disease\, heart disease\, allergies\, and hypothyroidism.\n\n\n\n\nUltimately\, early detection of disease may alleviate suffering and save lives. \n\n\n\nNote: Since this is a research study and the meaning of individual results is not yet fully validated\, no results will be released to owners.
